Bribery is defined in law as giving someone a financial or other advantage to encourage them to perform their functions or activities improperly – or to reward that person for having already done so.

It doesn’t have to involve cash or an actual payment exchanging hands – it can take many forms, such as a gift, lavish treatment during a business trip or tickets to an event.

The reasons for bribery in the commercial sector are numerous and include:

  • Securing or keeping a contract
  • Securing an order
  • Gaining any advantage over a competitor
  • Turning a blind eye to contravention of the law – for example a health and safety failing
  • Obtaining a certificate or some other form of recognition or authorisation

The Bribery Act 2010 became law on 1st July 2011 and applies throughout the UK – updating older and much-criticised laws on bribery. Introduction of the Act makes it easier for authorities to bring successful prosecutions for bribery committed at home or abroad. This course looks at this topic and everyone’s obligations under it.
