RoSPA Approved e-learning Course

Staying Safe with DSE-An Overview

The course is the first in a suite of four that deal with DSE in all its forms and how to avoid the negative effects on health that arise from improper use. This course looks at a number of issues that are common to all forms of DSE; subsequent courses will consider fixed DSE, fixed workstations, and mobile DSE.

Course Content
• The nature and symptoms of the following conditions as they relate to DSE use:
• A definition of the term ‘Display Screen Equipment’
• Upper Limb Disorders
• Visual disorders
• Stress and fatigue
• Employers’ obligations in respect of DSE and workstation
safety legislation
• How risks associated with DSE use are controlled

Staying Safe with DSE-Fixed DSE

This course deals with DSE that is used in association with a permanently sited workstation and is not designed to be carried or moved from place to place – in other words the type of DSE that is found in most office workplaces. Millions of people in the UK use this type of display screen equipment for a significant part of their work, and one of the results of this widespread use is an increasing concern about the associated range of health and safety problems.

This course, therefore, aims to enable the learner to work safely when using fixed display screens, keyboards and pointing devices.

This course forms part of a suite of four courses, the first being a general overview of working safely with DSE, the second being this course, and the other two dealing with fixed workstations and mobile DSE.

Course Content
• How to position a display screen for safe working
• The legal requirements for safe use of display screens
• How health problems can arise from incorrect use of a
keyboard or mouse
• How to use a keyboard and computer mouse safely

Staying Safe with DSE-Fixed Workstations

In order to comply with health and safety regulations – and provide individuals with a comfortable working environment – workstations need to be right for the person using it and the job they do.
Under DSE health and safety legislation any object in the users immediate work environment is considered to be part of their workstation.

This includes the table or desk they work on, their chair, the area under or next to their desk and any equipment on their desk.

This course aims to enable the learner to recognise the features of
a safe fixed workstation and to set it up correctly and use it safely.
The course forms part of a suite of four courses, the first being a
general overview of working safely with Display Screen Equipment or ‘DSE’ – the second dealing with fixed DSE, the third being this course, and the fourth covering mobile DSE.

Course Content
• How to arrange desktop working space correctly
• The features of a safe workstation
• The importance of sitting correctly
• The features of a safe workstation chair
• Why breaks in workstation activity are important

Staying Safe with DSE-Mobile DSE

Mobile Display Screen Equipment encompasses laptops,
notebooks, tablets and smartphones, and its use is increasing
rapidly as multiple work locations and work on the move
becomes more widespread.
Mobile devices have many benefits; unfortunately, however, the
design features that make them mobile — such as small screens
and integrated keyboards — as well as their use in a wide range of
environments, bring their own health risks.
It’s important to remember that, although workstation guidelines
within the ’Display Screen Equipment Regulations 1992’ are mainly
limited to fixed DSE, mobile DSE is also subject to the Regulations
if it is in prolonged use.

This course aims to enable the learner to recognise the risks
created by mobile DSE and to address those risks appropriately.

The course forms part of a suite of four courses, the first being a
general overview of working safely with Display Screen Equipment or ‘DSE’ – the second dealing with fixed DSE, the third covering fixed workstations, and the fourth being this course.

Course Content

• How to manage the risks of musculoskeletal problems
• How musculoskeletal problems can arise through the use of
mobile DSE
• How to limit manual handling risks associated with mobile DSE
• The importance of regular rest breaks
• How to set up a safe working environment for the use of
mobile DSE
